Bonny Grey-Ey'd Morn

Bonny Grey-Ey'd Morn is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1698 in An Additional Sheet of New Dances for the Second Part of the Country Dancing Master, London. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2000 and published in Mr. Kynaston's Famous Dance. Found in The Playford Assembly. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: B flat major.

Kynaston writes:

The 1. Man turn the 2. Wo. and come up into his own Place, and cast off below the 2. Man; the 1. Wo. do the same The 2. cu. being in the 1. cu. Place, do the same
The 1. cu. being in their own Places, cross over below the 2. cu. and go the Figure, then lead thro' the three cu. and cast up into the 2. cu. Place, the 2. cu. being in the 1. cu. Place do the same, the 1. cu. casting off at the same time.

Originally a triple minor.

The tune, also called Bonny Grey-Ey'd Morn, was composed by Jeremiah Clark around 1690. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album By Choice. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 100 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, turn single cloverleaf, cast, lead, figure eight, lead and cast, cross go below (and probably others).
