Captain's Maggot

Captain's Maggot is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in about 1696 in The Second Part of the Dancing Master, 2nd ed., London. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2006 and published in Emperor of the Moon. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: F Major.

Playford writes:

The 1. man go within-side of the 2. man, then go round about him and stand below 3. man the 1 wo. do the same The 1. cu. being below the 3. cu. cross over above the 3. cu. and so above the 2. cu. into their own places The 1. man take hands with his Partner and lead down the 2. cu. then lead up again into their own places and cast off

Originally a triple minor

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: turn single, gypsy, cast, lead, hey, hey for three, down the middle and back (and probably others).
