Clydeside Lassies ~ RSCDS

Clydeside Lasses ~ Williams Clydeside Lassies ~ RSCDS

Clydeside Lassies ~ RSCDS is a Scottish Country Dance. It was devised by Lowe in about 1831 and published in Lowes' Ball-Conductor and Assembly Guide, Edinburgh. It was interpreted by RSCDS in about 1977 and published in Miss Milligan's Miscellany 1. It is R8×32 2C/4C, a proper Duple Minor dance. R32.

Miss Milligan's Miscellany attributes this dance to Mozart Allan's Allan's Reference Guide to the Ball-Room, ~1880 in which it is called "Clydesdale Lassies". However the Lowes published it fifty years earlier as "Clydeside Lasses".

The Lowes write:

Four hands round; down the middle, and up again; pousette, and right and left.

It is worth noting that to the Lowes "down the middle, and up again" was a progressive figure, while "pousette" was not.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: circle, lead, rights and lefts, down the middle and back (and probably others).
