Cox Heath is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1779 in Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1779. It was interpreted by A. Simons in about 1990 and published in Kentish Hops. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars.
Simons says this dance comes from The Apted Book which is a collection of eighteenth century dances with no indication of their sources. There is a source for a dance with this name in Thompson, 1779 (which is approximately the right time), but the figures don't match. None-the-less I copy it here.
Thompson writes:
Half right and left the same back again Cross over one Cu. Right & Left at top
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: cast, lead, hands across, rights and lefts, lead and cast, cross go below (and probably others).
