Damme

Dampier

Damey

Damme or Dampier is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1698 in The Dancing Master, 10th ed., London. It was interpreted by Colin Hume (website) in 2013 and published in Colin Hume's Website. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 24 bars. Someone thought this dance was Intermediate.

Playford writes:

All four set to your Partners and turn S. and hands half round All four set to your Partners and turn S. and hands half round into your own places The 2. man go back to back, the women the same at the same time; then right and left with your Partners quite round The 1. cu. go the Figure through into their own places, then right and left with your Partners whih brings the 1. cu. into the 2. cu. place

Colin Hume is particular about how the steps should mesh with the music. I cannot do him justice an merely refer you to his instructions.

Colin Hume describes the heys as "circular heys", which usually means without hands, but he also says that the last change of the last hey is a right turn half. So I think he intends them to be with hands.

The tune was published with the dance, and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.

The animation plays at 136 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: set, turn single, circle, figure eight, rights and lefts, back to back (and probably others).
