Dick's Maggot ~ Sharp, 16bars

Dick's Maggot ~ Sharp, 24 bars Dick's Maggot ~ Hume Dick's Maggot ~ Sharp, 16bars

Dick's Maggot ~ Sharp, 16bars is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1702 in Twenty Four New Country Dances, London. It was interpreted by Cecil Sharp (website) in 1922 and published in The Country Dance Book (Part 6). Found in The Playford Ball. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 16 bars. Someone thought this dance was Intermediate / Hard.

Sharp published two variants of this dance, one with 16 bars and one with 24 (this is the 16 bar version).

This is a slight modification of Sharp's interpretation: Couples take hands when they cross, and retain that clasp for the lead.

Playford writes:

The 1. cu. cross over, and the 2. cu. casts off Then change places across Then cast up in your own places, and back to back, then Right and Left and turn

Pat Shaw claims that Cecil Sharp's interpreation of this dance is more like "Double the Cape" and that his interpretation of that dance is more like "Dick's Maggot". Both are to the same tune. And the figures are very similar.

The tune was published with the dance, and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.

The animation plays at 108 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.
