Double the Cape

Dick's Maggot ~ Pat Shaw

Double the Cape or Dick's Maggot ~ Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, London. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 16 bars.

Pat Shaw gives two dates for his work on this dance, 1966 and a revision in 1972.

This dance is basically the same as Dick's Maggot. (the music is the same)

Playford writes:

Note: The first Strain is to be play'd twice, and the last but once.

The first Couple cross over, and the second Couple cast off. This to the first Strain play'd once Then change Places a-cross, and cast up into your own Places. This to the first Strain play'd twice Then Back to Back, then Right and Left quite round, cast off and turn.

The tune was published with the dance, and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.

The animation plays at 108 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

A11-21s cross, go below, as 2s lead up
3-42s cast down as 1s lead up and turn out
A21-2Women hole in the wall cross
3-4Men hole in the wall cross
B1-21s cast up as 2s lead down and turn out
3-4All partner back to back
5-6Face partner, two changes of rights and lefts
7-8Partner two hand turn to proper (1s once and a half, 2s once)
