The Duke of Kent's Waltz ~ Hume

The Duke of Kent's Waltz ~ Hume The Duke of Kent's Waltz ~ Simons

The Duke of Kent's Waltz ~ Hume is an English Country Dance. It was published by W.M. Cahusac in 1801 in W.M. Cahusac's Annual Collection. It was interpreted by Colin Hume (website) in 2017 and published in Colin Hume's Website. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 48 bars. It is in the key: G major. Someone thought this dance was Easy.

The Duke of Kent was the fourth son (5th child) of George III of England. He never became king, but his daughter became Queen Victoria who ruled from 1837-1901. He was unmarried when this dance was written.

He served in the military in Canada from roughly 1791-1800, and was appointed Duke of Kent in 1799.

Colin Hume describes the allemande in this dance as "1s link right arms and stretch those arms behind their backs to take their partner's left hand and turn once around (paying great attention to their partner), then back with a left allemande."

Note the hands across in the A parts are very slow.

Cahusac writes:

Right hands across left hands back lead down the middle up again Allemand & swing Corners

The tune was published by Cahusac with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album A Playford Ball. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

I have modified it slightly, Hume's version of the dance is AABB, while BBare Necessities played AAB.

The animation plays at 132 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, hands across (and probably others).
