Fight about the Fireside ~ RSCDS

Fight about the Fireside ~ Lowes Fight about the Fireside ~ RSCDS

Fight about the Fireside ~ RSCDS is a Scottish Country Dance. It was published by Nathaniel Gow in about 1822 in Five Favourite Country Dances, Edinburgh. It was interpreted by RSCDS in 1924 and published in RSCDS Book 1. It is R8×32 3C/4C, a proper Triple Minor dance. R32.

In 1781 Longman & Brodrip published a dance with this name but a different figure. Book 1 attributes this to Nathaniel Gow, but I have been unable to find any choreographies published by him (though lots of music). The earliest source I can find is from the Lowes write:

Down the middle, and up again; reel three and three across the dance, the Lady with the first couple, and the Gentleman with the second; set and turn corners; then set, and turn partners.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

1-81s lead down, turn (as 2s move up), lead up to 1st corners
9-161s pass 1st corners right to start reels of three across the dance, end facing 1st corners
17-201s+1st corners set and two hand turn, 1s end facing 2nd corners
21-241s+1st corners set and two hand turn, 1s end 2nd place opposite side
25-281s set twice
29-321s right hand turn to own side
