John's Maggot

John's Maggot is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Victor Skowronski (website) in 2003. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: G minor.

I cannot see how Victor's directions work. D2 (or D5-8) does not make any sense to me. The dancers end C in the same sequence in which they end A. B involves no changes in order, and C leaves everyone where they started. Then D1 (D1-4) leaves the middle couple unchanged and swaps the two end couples. Everyone is still across from partner. If the men circle once and a half and the women once then, partners do not end up across from each other. As far as I can tell everyone needs to circle once and a half. That is what I have done, it seems to work, but it may not be what Victor intended.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: set, gypsy, circle, cast, lead, hey, mirror hey, siding (and probably others).
