Love and Beauty ~ Bentley

Joy After Sorrow ~ Bentley or Love and Beauty ~ Bentley is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1718 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, 3rd ed., London. It was interpreted by Bernard Bentley in 1980 and published in The Fallibroome Collection, Vol. 6. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 48 bars.

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be Play'd twice over.
first Man go down the Middle below the 3d Wo. first Wo. slips Outside to meet her Partner, and turn single, the first Wo slip up the Middle to the Top, her Partner slip Outside the Men, both turn single First Cu. Sett, go the Hey Sides with the 2d and 3d. Cu First Man take the 2d Wo. by her Left Hand, lead her to the 3d Cu. and turn single, Figure between the first Wo. and 2d Man, and turn First Cu. take Hands with the 2d Wo and go round till you are Improper in the 2d Cu. Place, cross up the Middle to your Place, fall back one Step, and cast off

Originally a triple minor.

Bentley mentions that this choreography is also used for the dance Love and Beauty found in The Dancing Maſter, The Third Volume of 1726. The music is different, however.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, circle, cast, lead, figure eight, hey, mirror hey, siding (and probably others).
