Lincoln

Bolton

Lincoln or Bolton is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1698 in The Dancing Master, 10th ed., London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1986 and published in Retreads Vol.2. Originally proper this version is an improper duple minor longways dance. The minor set lasts 24 bars.

Playford writes:

First man on the wo. side.
First cu. cast off, 2. cu. lead up into their places, set to your own, and turn S. all four; 2. cu. cast off, 1. cu. lead up as before, set and turn S. 1. man goes within-side, round about the 2. wo. and the 1. wo. go without-side round the 2. man at the same time; then the 2. wo. go within-side round the 1. man and the 2. man without-side round the 1. wo. as before, right-hands with your own, then left hands with the contrary.

Playford shows the 3s and 4s improper rather than 1s and 2s. Doesn't matter much.

Personally I find the half circles in III.B* to be slow. I'd add a turn single left after each if I were calling (even though Playford doesn't mention that).

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
