Love for Love: Danc'd in the Play

Love for Love or Love for Love: Danc'd in the Play is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1696 in The second Part of the Dancing Master, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1992 and published in Retreads Vol.6. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 34 bars.

Playford writes:
The 1. man put his wo. from him, and the 2. man pull his wo. to him and set, then the 1. man and 2. wo. back back and go round their Partners both on the left hand at the same time, then the 2. man and 1. wo. turn right hands found to the Figure of a Diamond. This to the first Strain play'd once The 1. man turn the 2. wo. and right-hands round, then each to their own Partners and left-hands round till they come to the Diamond again. This to the first Strain play'd twice Each man cross over with his own wo. with ther left-hands one to the other; then back again to the left till the come all on a row longways, then clap both hands against each other; the 1. man cast off to the left-hand and his wo. follow him, the 2. wo. cast off to the left-hand and her man follow her, then each cross over with his own Partner, the 1. cu. being in the 2. rank. This to the second Strain play'd once Then move to the left-hand to each others places and clap hands, the same back again, then right and left twice, each beginning with his own Partner; then hands half-round to the left.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
