Manage the Miser ~ Pat Shaw

Manage the Miser ~ Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in 1966 and published in Another Look at Playford. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be Play'd twice over.
The first Man cast off, the second Woman cast up, then go the Figure of Eight through the other two. This to the first Strain play'd once. The second Man cast off, the first Woman cast up and go the Figure as before. This to the first Strain play'd twice. Then all Four Hands a-cross and back again, then Right and Left. This to the second Strain play'd once. Then lead through the third Couple and through the second Couple, and turn your Partner. This to the second Strain play'd twice.

Pat Shaw points out that the figure of this dance is the same as News from Tripoly but with a different tune.

Pat suggests that the 2s be active in B2, casting around the next 1s and leading back, then casting around their own 1s and leading back, and then two hand turning. Or they may be stationary for all of B2, which is what they probably did in Playford's day.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, figure eight, hands across, rights and lefts, cast and lead, lead and cast (and probably others).
