Margate Assembly ~ Burnett
Margate Assembly ~ Burnett is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Burnett and Rawlins in 1782. It was interpreted by A. Simons in about 1990 and published in Kentish Hops. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.
This figure and tune appeared first in Burnett and Rawline's publication of 1782 and later in Longman and Broderip's wenty-Four Country Dances for the Year 1791. Preston's version (1792) seems based on it.
Simons says 1st couple leading, all double cast left to the bottom and back to the top. This doesn't make sense to me. If the women cast left they don't go to the bottom. So I'm assuming he means all cast down.
If the 2s + 3s double cast they will go beyond the bottom.
What does he mean by "1st couple leading"? do the 2s(+3s) wait to cast until the 1s have passed by them? but then if they go the same distance down as the 1s, they won't get back to the top until after the 1s are done. Since they aren't active in B1, I suppose they could slot into place after the 1s have started the next move?
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: set, circle, cast, lead, hey, circular hey, down the middle and back (and probably others).
