Paddy Whack ~ Thompson/Pat Shaw

Paddy Whack ~ Thompson/Pat Shaw Paddy Whack ~ Rutherford/Williams

Paddy Whack ~ Thompson/Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1772 in Thompson's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1772, London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in 1960 and published in Another Look at Playford. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Thompson writes:

Turn Right Hands & cast off 1 Cu. lead thro' the bottom & cast up turn Left hands & lead thro' the top & cast off hands 6 round Right and Left at top

Another Look at Playford attributes this dance to Rutherford, but this interpretation is based on Thompson's version. Thompson's version contains lead thro' the bottom at the end of A1, while Rutherford's does not.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), circle, cast, lead, rights and lefts, lead and cast (and probably others).
