The Pleasures of the Town

The Pleasures of the Town ~ Apted The Pleasures of the Town

The Pleasures of the Town is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1777, London. It was interpreted by ?John Garden sometime before 2020-08-10. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Thompson writes:

The 1st. 2d. and 3d. Gentn. take hands & go round their Partners the Ladies the same the first Cu: go round with the allemand till they come in their places again the 2d. and 3d. Cu: follows. cross over and right and left

This interpretation is from the Ottawa ECD site, it does not say who did the interpretation but perhaps John Garden. Presumably it was based on the earlier work of Porter in 1931. Since the original (in Thompson) was a triple minor this may be truer to it than the Apted version (a 3 couple longways). The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: circle, lead, rights and lefts, promenade round (and probably others).
