Portsmouth ~ Sharp

Portsmouth ~ Pat Shaw Portsmouth ~ Sharp

Portsmouth ~ Sharp is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1701 in The Dancing Master, 11th ed., London. It was interpreted by Cecil Sharp (website) in 1922 and published in The Country Dance Book (Part 6). Found in The Playford Ball. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 24 bars.

Playford writes:
The first man Hey with the first and second woman, the first woman do the same with the first and second man; then the first couple cross over and Figure in; then right and left quite round.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

A11-8M1 right shoulder hey with women
A21-8W1 left shoulder hey with men
B1-41s half figure eight down between the 2s then change with partner
5-8Three changes of a circular hey starting with partner
