Sabina

Madamoiselle Dupingle

Sabina or Madamoiselle Dupingle is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1718 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, 3rd ed., London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in about 1965 and published in Another Look at Playford. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Playford published the same figure and music under two different names. It appeared as Madamozelle Dupingle in 1718, Madamoiselle Dupingle in 1728, and Sabina in 1726.

Playford writes (for Madamoiselle Dupingle):

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The two first Cu. Hands all four round the Minuet Step, and turn single Then the other half round and turn single Then the first Cu. cast off and turn Hands Then lead thro' the 3d Cu. and cast up

Or thus: The first Cu. cast off and up again The 2d Cu. cast off be low the 3s Cu. and back agan to their Places The the two first Cu. follow each other half round, then clap Hands once, then follow the other half round, and clap Hands once The two Men go the half Figure between the two Women, then the first Cu. cast off

Playford writes (for Sabina):

Note: This Dance must be done with the Minuet Step

First all four Hands round the Minuet Step, and turn single Then the other half round and turn single Then the first Cu. cast off and turn Hands Then lead through the 3d Couple and cast up

For a description of the minuet step see the book Another Look at Playford page 183.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, circle, cast, lead, lead and cast (and probably others).
