Sam's Maggot ~ Herman

Sam's Maggot ~ Andrew Shaw Sam's Maggot ~ Herman

Sam's Maggot ~ Herman is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1728, London. It was interpreted by Fried de Metz Herman (website) in 1995 and published in Ease and Elegance. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Walsh writes:

Note: Each strain twice.

The 1st man figure sides below the 3d, come up the middle and turn 1st wo. half round, proper to his place The 1st wo. do the same on her side, and turn partner The 1st and 2d man foot it to their partners all four turn single, take right and left hands go half round & turn sides quite round then foot it as before take right hand and left half round the 1st. cu. set.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, circle, cast, lead, hey, circular hey (and probably others).
