The Newmarket Lass
The Market Lass
The Newmarket Lass or The Market Lass is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Burbank in 1799. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1991 and published in Retreads Vol.5. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. It is a triple progression dance. Originally this was a single progression dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.
Down outside, and cross below 3rd couple and cast up one - six balance, gentleman sacha to the left, and place himself between the 2nd couple, the lady sacha to the left and place herself between the 3rd couple - six balance, give your partner your right hand andswing round so as to stand in a right position to right and left at top - right and left.
Oritinal title was The Market Lass, but because Bolton made a new version of it he calls it The Newmarket Lass.
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
