The Pilgrim ~ Pat Shaw

The Lord Phopington ~ Pat Shaw

The Pilgrim ~ Pat Shaw The Pilgrim ~ Bentley

The Pilgrim ~ Pat Shaw or The Lord Phopington ~ Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1701 in The Dancing Master, 11th ed., London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in about 1970 and published in Another Look at Playford. Found in The Playford Assembly. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Playford writes:
The 1. man turns the Second wo. and hands half round, then turn Single The 1. wo. does the same The 1. cu. does the half Figure between the 2. cu. and the 2. cu. does the same Then lead through the 2. cu. and right and left sides

Playford published two dances called The Lord Phopington, one was also called The Pilgrim, while the other only had the one name. Both the music and the figure differ.

To add to the confusion Pat Shaw says that the description of B2 is different in the 17 edition from the one here (14th edition) and that is what Bentley used in his interpretation.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, circle, cast, lead, figure eight, rights and lefts, lead and cast (and probably others).
