The Pride of Newcastle

The Pride of Newcastle is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Pat Shaw (website) in 1963 and published in Pat Shaw Collection of Dances. It is a 3 Couple Circle dance. In this dance the men are permuted by: 123 and the women by: 312. It is a mixer. The minor set lasts 24 bars. It is in the key: D major.

Personally I think Pat Shaw has the timing wrong for B2. The ladies chain takes 4 bars but is only three quarters round (or so) while the star promenade takes 3 bars and is all the way round with a bigger radius. When the women turn in front of the men I think that would take more than 1 bar. I'd suggest 2.4.2 rather than 4.3.1. But I leave Pat's timing here.

The tune was composed by Pat Shaw for the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album A New English Ball. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 106 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, circle, lead, rights and lefts, calfornia twirl, star promenade (and probably others).

If you find what you believe to be a mistake in this animation, please leave a comment on youtube explaining what you believe to be wrong. If I agree with you I shall do my best to fix it.
