The Spaniard ~ Thompson

The Spaniard ~ Thompson is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1777, London. It was interpreted by W. S. Porter, M. Heffer, A. Heffer in 1931 and published in The Apted Book of Country Dances. Found in The Playford Assembly. Mentioned in the article A Trip to Netherfield. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: G major. Someone thought this dance was Easy.

Thompson writes:

1st. Gentn. foot it to the 2d. Lady and both turn single the 1st. Gentn. turn his Partner The 1st. Lady and 2d. Gentn. do the same lead down the middle up again cast off Hands 6 round

The tune was published by Thompson with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album Simple Pleasures. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 113 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, circle, cast, lead (and probably others).
