A Trip O'er the Tweed

A Trip O'er the Tweed is a Scottish Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second. It was interpreted by RSCDS Book 28 in 1977. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. J48

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The first Couple cast off and fall in between the second and third Woman and Man, and lead backward and forward · Then first Woman cast off and fall in between the third Man and third Woman, the Man cast up and fall in between the second Man and second Woman at the same Time; then lead backward and forward : The first Man and first Woman meet and fall back, the Man cast off round the second Woman, and the second Woman cast up round the third Man, then Righ and Lift quite round · Back to Back with your own, then Back with the second Couple, then the Man lead his Partner up round the second Woman into their proper Places, Sett and cast off :

The Tweed is a river on the border between Scotland and England, flowing into the North Sea.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance is slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, hey, rights and lefts (and probably others).
