Irish Wash Woman ~ Duple

Irish Wash Woman ~ Duple Irish Wash Woman

Irish Wash Woman ~ Duple is an American Country Dance. It was devised by Asa Willcox in 1793 and published in Asa Willcox's Book of Figures, Connecticut. It was interpreted by Kate van Winkle Keller & Ralph Sweet in 1976 and published in A Choice Selection of American Country Dances of the Revolutionary Era. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Saltator writes:

First couple down the middle, up brissè, second couple down the middle, up brisè, then the second couple down the middle, up cast off, right and left atop.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, circle, cast, lead, lead and cast, regency allemande, down the middle and back (and probably others).
