Knives and Forks ~ Shapiro

Knives and Forks ~ Shapiro Knives and Forks

Knives and Forks ~ Shapiro is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg, Shapiro in 1987. Found in The Playford Assembly. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 16 bars.

The Neals write:

each strain twice

1st. cu: cast off & back to back in 2d. cu: place:
cast up & back to back in their own places:
1st. & 2d. cu: lead to ye wall, face a bout & cross over end improper:
1st. ma: & 2d. wo: change places, 1st. wo: & 2d. ma: ye same each man turning his own partner wth. both hands

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, lead, back to back (and probably others).
