Lastrum Pone
Lastrum Pone is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 16 bars.
The Neals write:
1st cu: cast off & lead half through 2d wth right hands:
lead down with left hands & cast up to their own place's:
1st & 2d men take hands, their partner's ye same att same time fall back & dance;
right & left half round:
Oddly, the Neals published 8 strains of music for this dance, but use only two of them.
I suspect Jackson and Fogg may have misinterpreted the hand clasps. Since instructions are often directed to man 1, I wonder if the Neals mean that the man should join his right to his partner's left, rather than a right in right join. Normally if you join right in right you're not going to switch to a left in left join when turning, but you would with a nearest hand join. I am following my instincts in this animation, and not the Jackson and Fogg interpretation.
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: cast, lead, rights and lefts, lead and cast (and probably others).
