Les Colisée

Paris Pantheon

Les Colisée or Paris Pantheon is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Matthew Welch in 1767. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Welch provides diagrams (not shown here, see Another Look at Playford.) and the following notes:

  1. The 1st. & 2d. Cu: change Sides & Rigadoon step.
  2. The 1st. Cu: cast of, and meet at the bottom, at the same time the 2d. Cu: turn in their own place.
  3. The 1st. & 3d. Cu: change Sides & Rigadoon step.
  4. The 1st. Cu: cast up, at the same time the 3d. Cu: turn in their own place.
  5. The 1st. Cu: join hands and lead between the 2d. and 3d. Ladies.
  6. The same between the 2d. and 3d. Gentlemen.
  7. The 1st. Lady hunt round the 3d. Gentleman and Rigadoon step, at the same time the 1st. Gentn. hunt round the top Lady & Rigadoon.
  8. The same continued and Ballottèe

According to Pat Shaw, a "Rigadoon" starts with the feet together, swing the right foot out to the side with the toe pointing down, same with the left, end with feet together. I simply show a basic "setting" step.

Pat does not mention when the 2s move up. I presume it is during the Lead out to the sides sequence.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
