Mr Edwards Maggot

Mr Edwards Maggot is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Nathaniel Kynasston in 1718 and published in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1718. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2024 and published in The Irish Howle. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 40 bars.

Kynaston writes:

The first strain twice the last but once
The 1st. man and 2d wo. change place dance to each other and turn hands half round the 1st. wo. and 2d. man do the same the 1st. man take the 2d. man by his right hand and slip inside below him then the 3d. by his left hand and slip outside him and the 1st. wo. do the same on her side at the same time meet below th 3d. cu. the 1st. man take his partner by the right hand and change place change sides then the 1st. cu. change in the 2d. cu. place take all six hands go half round and back again the 1st. man cast up his partner follow him take hands and turn down the middle

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, circle, cast, lead, rights and lefts (and probably others).
