Mr. Lane's Maggot ~ Pfitzinger is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1695 in The Dancing Master, 9th ed., London. It was interpreted by Scott Pfitzinger (website) in 2019. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.
The 1. cu. cast off and lead through the 3. cu. then cast off and leap up through both cu. and cast off into the 2. cu. place; the 1. man being in the 2. man's place turn the 1. wo with the right hand, and fall into their own places, the 1. co. being in the 2. wo. place turn the 1. man, and so fall into their own places, then all four lead up abreast, and cast off into the 2. cu. place.
Note: Each Strain is to be played twice over; likewise in the following SONG, which was made to this Tune, and each Strain is also to be sung twice over.
Playford describes a triple minor, but as the 3s do absolutely nothing, I think modern dancers would prefer this as a duple minor.
The tune was published with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album A Playford Ball. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.
The animation plays at 116 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
