The Recruiting Officer - Neal

The Recruiting Officer - Neal ~ 3 Couple The Recruiting Officer - Neal

The Recruiting Officer - Neal is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

The Neals write:

1st cu: cast off & half figure wth 3d cu: ending improper in 2d cu: place:
1st cu: half figure wth 2d cu: ending proper in 2d cu: place & turn both hands:
1st man: turn 2d ma: wth right hands & 1st wo: turn 2d wo: wth her left at ye same time, 1st ma: turn 2d man: wth left hand, & 1st wo: turn 3d wo: wth her right at ye same time, 1st cu: ending in 3d cu: place:
st cu: lead up thrô ye cuples to ye top, cast off into 2d cu: place & turn both hands:

In 1710 Kynaston devised a dance of the samme name (which both Walsh and Playford published) and similar music, but different figures.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, figure eight, lead and cast (and probably others).
