Rory O'More ~ Contra

Rory O'More ~ Contra Rory O'More ~ Scottish

Rory O'More ~ Contra is an American Country Dance. It was published by Elias Howe in 1858 in Complete Ball-Room Hand Book, Boston. It was interpreted by sometime before 2020-01-13. Found in Cracking Chestnuts. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Howe writes:

First couple cross over, down the outside below two, up the centre cross to place and cast off — join right hands balance and step two steps to the right by each other, join left hands and balance again — swing contra corners — balance and turn to place

I added an alteration between 1s and 2s in who is active, as otherwise the dance is rather dull for the 2s.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: cast, figure eight, swing, cross go below, turn corners (and probably others).
