Sally in our Alley

Sally in our Alley is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1719 in The Second Book of The Compleat Country Dancing-Master, London. It was interpreted by Jacqueline Schwab in 1987. Found in The Playford Assembly. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 24 bars. It is in the key: C major. Someone thought this dance was Intermediate.

Walsh writes:

Note, Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The 1st Man cast off, and the 2d Wo. cast up and half figure The 2d Man cast up, and the 1st Wo. cast off and half figure Then the Men being in the We. Places, and the We. in the Men's, fall back all four, and cross over into your own Places, right hands and left quite round The 1st Man change Places with the 2d Wo. and the 2d Man with the 1st Wo. and go quite round, cast off and turn Partners

The tune was published with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album Favorites of the Boston Centre. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 104 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), circle, cast, figure eight, hey, circular hey (and probably others).
