Salutation ~ Anon is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Young (Playford family) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second. It was interpreted by Anonymous sometime before 2025-09-17. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. The tune is in triple time.
John Young writes:
Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over. The first two Men lead through the two Women, then cast off, and Back to Back and turn The two Women do the same The first Man changes Places with the second Woman, and the first Woman with the second Man, and Hands half round and cast off; then lead through the third Couple and cast up Then Right and Left quite round with the second Couple
The notes on a video claim that this dance appeared earlier, in Walsh, 1706 (It certainly appeared in 1719 in Walsh). This may be correct, but I cannot verify it.
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
An online description of the dance may be found here.
The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), circle, cast, lead, hey, circular hey, lead and cast, back to back, hole in the wall (and probably others).
