Spanish Jigg - Neal

Spanish Jigg - Neal is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: C major.

The Neals write:

1st cu: cast off into 2d cu: place:
Then cast off into 3d cu: place:
Take both hands & trip betwix't ye cu: to top:
back to back:
1st ma: dance down on ye outside of his sex, his par:ye same betweene ye cus: att ye same time, & stop in 3d cu: place:
Then 1st ma: dance up betweene ye cus: & his par: ye same on ye outside of her sex to their own places:
back to back:
right & left:

In 1695 Playford published a dance with the same name and tune but a different figure.

The tune was published with the dance. It was performed by Bare Necessities (Earl Gaddis, Mary Lea, Peter Barnes, and Jacqueline Schwab) on the album Strong Roots. The music is used with permission from the Country Dance Society, Boston Centre, Inc.

The animation plays at 115 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: cast, rights and lefts, back to back (and probably others).
