Texas Star

Texas Star is a Square Dance. It was published by Lloyd Shaw in 1939 in Cowboy Dances. It is a Square dance. It is a mixer. The minor set lasts 160 bars.

Lloyd Shaw writes:

THE CALL:

  1. Salute your company
And the lady on your left.
    All join paddies
    And circle to your left.
Break and swing and promenade back.
    1. Ladies to the center
      and back to the bar,
    2. Gents to the center
      For a Texas Star,
    3. Back with the left and don't get lost.
    4. Pass your gal and pick up the next.
    5. Ladies swing in and the gents swing out.
    6. Break in the center and everybody swing.
    7. Now allemande left just one,
    8. And promenade the girl you swung.
    9. Repeat three more times, on the first and second repetition saying:
Pass that gal and take the next
      And the last time saying:
Pass that gal and take your own.
  2. Now you're home and everybody swing,
Allemande left with your left hand
Right to the partner and right and left grand,
    Meet your partner and promenade.

I remember dancing this in the 60s and the caller used the same calls that Shaw published 30 years before.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), circle, hands across, rights and lefts, swing (and probably others).
