What You Please - Skillern ~ RSCDS

What You Please - Skillern What You Please - Skillern ~ RSCDS

What You Please - Skillern ~ RSCDS is a Scottish Country Dance. It was published by Thomas Skillern in 1780 in Skillern's Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1780, London. It was interpreted by RSCDS in about 1977 and published in Miss Milligan's Miscellany 2. It is J8×40 3C/4C, a proper Triple Minor dance. J40.

The RSCDS attributes this to Twenty Four Country Dances for the Year 1781 but according to Robert Keller the 1781 publication contains on such dance, however, the 1780 publication did. So I presume someone miscopied the date.

Playford published a dance with this name in 1657, but it has a completely different figure.

Skillern writes:
First and 2d. Cu Set change & Right hands across The same back again & Left hands across lead down the middle up again and cast off Hands 4 at bottom Right and Left at top

The music consists of two 8 bar strains of a jig.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: set, circle, cast, lead, hands across, rights and lefts, down the middle and back (and probably others).
