Clapham Frolick

Clapham Frolick is an English Country Dance. It was published by Johnson in 1751 in A Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, Vol. 6th, London. It was interpreted by Bernard Bentley in 1977 and published in The Fallibroome Collection, Vol. 5. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Johnson writes:

The 1st. set with the 2d. Man and turn The 1st. set with the 2d. Wo. and turn The 1st. and 2d. Cu. set and Hands across half round the same back again the 1st. Cu. cross below the 2d. Cu. and turn the same below the 3d. Cu. Lead up to the Top and cast off Right and Left at Top

Nicolas Broadridge suggests the 1s do half turns in A1, instead of the full full turns Bentley uses.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, lead, hands across, rights and lefts, lead and cast, cross go below (and probably others).
