The Drummer - Rutherford

The Drummer - Rutherford The Drummer - Rutherford ~ RSCDS

The Drummer - Rutherford is an English Country Dance. It was published by David Rutherford in 1756 in Rutherford's compleat Collection of 200 of the most celebrated Country Dances both Old and New, Vol. 1, London. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Pat Shaw's interpretation is undated, presumably from the 1960s or 70s.

Rutherford writes:

The first Cu. sets to the 2d. Wo. & Hands round all three The same to the Man Hands round all four with the 2d. Cu. Right Hand & Left into the 2d. Cu. place Foot it Corners and turn Foot it the other Corners & turn Hey Contrary sides Foot it to your Partner and turn it out

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.
