Maggie Lauder

Moggy Lauther ~ 3 Couple Moggy Lauther

Moggy Lauther or Maggie Lauder is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 48 bars.

The Neals write:

1st cu: sett & cast off into 2d cu: place, sett & cast off into 3d cu: place:
Lead up to top thrô ye, goe round 2d cu: & turn both hands in 2d cu: place:
Then lead thrô 3d cu: goe round them turn both hands in 2d cu: place:
1st ma: sett to 2d wo: turn single, 1st wo: &2d ma: ye same:
1st ma: hey wth 3d cu: 1st wo: ye same with 2d cu: at same time:
1st ma: hey wth 2d cu: his par: ye same with 3d cu: at same time:

Personally I think the 1s should pass their 1st corners left in B4, but that's not what Jackson and Fogg say.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, cast, lead, hey, lead and cast (and probably others).
