Volpony ~ Callens

Volpony ~ Callens Volpony ~ Christian

Volpony ~ Callens is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1712 in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1712, London. It was interpreted by Philippe Callens in 2002 and published in Belgian Boutades. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. Someone thought this dance was Intermediate.

Walsh writes:

Note each strain twice

All four trip it to each other hands half fournd tirp it again the other half round the 1st cu. cast off and turn hands the 2d. cu. do the same back to back to your partners right and left quite round the 1st cu. go the whole figure through the 2d. cu. cast off lead quickly through the 3d. cu and cast up into the 2d. cu place

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, circle, cast, lead, figure eight, double figure eight, rights and lefts, cast and lead, lead and cast, back to back (and probably others).
