There are various ways of making percussive sounds with the body, clapping is the most common, stamping feet, snapping fingers, etc.

History

Playford uses clap in Gathering Peascods of 1651.

Playford uses stamp with the right foot in The Cuckow #1 of 1657.

Playford uses snap their fingers in Bobbing Joe of 1651.

Modern square dancing does not use clap, but in 1951 the Texas version of the dance Box the Gnat did.
