In a three couple right and left, all three couples cross by the right hand with partner. Then those in 2nd corner positions cross left on the diagonal while others cross left with neighbor on the sides. This repeats twice more returning everyone to their original places.
The earliest dance I can find with this figure on the SCDDB is Sterling of Caulder said to have been devised by Ron Wallace in 1978.
The next use is in Johnnie's Welcome Hame, by Neil Grant, 1982.
