Interlocking Reel

Also known as: Interwoven Hey.

Bars: 8 bars for a interlocking reel with 3 or 4 dancers.

Interwoven Heys of 3, Duple Minor Interlocking Reels of 4, Square Set In an interwoven hey/interlocking reel everyone acts as if they are at the end of the hey. They pass the requisite number of people, turn, and come back. However, no two dancers' personal reels will contain the same set of people. These heys may be linear, or wrap around a circle.

The number of people in each hey is arbitrary; I've only seen heys for three and four, but there's no reason one couldn't do it with more people.

In a duple minor dance, you can have heys on the sidelines which could in turn be either mirror or parallel. In a triple minor you couldn't have two heys on the sidelines, but you could view the minor set as a 6 person circle...

History

The first such hey I've found comes from Pat Shaw's Freda's Fancy which was written in 1949. In duple minor dances these heys go outside the minor set and so you would not expect to find them before the modern era.

In circles (or squares) they could have evolved earlier, but I haven't found any. John Drewry used one in a square set in his dance 1314 written in 1967.
