Butterfly Whirl

At the end of a star promenade, the dancers drop hands in the center and then couples twirl around their common center to progressed places.

History

The term "Butterfly Whirl" was used in Lloyd Shaw's Cowboy Dances, 1939, page 194, both as the name of a dance and a figure in that dance. The figure consisted of the dancers twirling on the spot with their hands above their heads to look like butterfly wings. Needless to say, this is completely different from the modern meaning.

The earliest example I know of comes from Erik Hoffman's There Is No Way To Peace; Peace Is the Way from 1992. But I don't know that that's the earliest.
