Burgundy's Flight ~ Bolton

Burgundy's Flight ~ Bentley Burgundy's Flight ~ Bolton

Burgundy's Flight ~ Bolton is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1986 and published in Retreads Vol.2. Originally proper this version is an indecent duple minor longways dance. The minor set lasts 40 bars. It is in the key: B# major.

Playford writes:

The first Couple cast off and turn the third Couple. This to the first Strain play'd once. The 2d Couple do the same. This to the first Strain play'd twice. All four change Places, then Sett to your Partners, then Sett Sides and turn quite round. This to the second Strain play'd once. Then Right and Left, Sett Sides the first Couple slip up the middle, Sett two Steps and cast off. This to the second Strain play'd once.

Bolton says that neutral couples (those out at top or bottom) should cross the set in the first 4 bars of A1, cross again in A2, and yet again in B1. This way everyone gets to two hand turn a member of the opposite sex. You can simplify by just crossing in A1 and turning whoever comes at you.

Originally a proper triple minor

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
