Cottey House ~ Kennedy

Cottey House ~ Hume Cottey House ~ Kennedy

Cottey House ~ Kennedy is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1702 in Twenty Four New Country Dances, London. It was interpreted by Douglas & Helen Kennedy in 1929 and published in Country Dance Book, New Series. Found in The Playford Ball. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 40 bars.

Playford writes:
The 1. cu. cast off and cross over into the 2. cu. place, the 1. Man and 2. Wo. lead to the wall, the 1. wo. and 2. man do the same at the same time The 2. cu. do the same as the first The 1. and 2. cu. turn back to back and clap hands, then face about and clap hands again, Right-hands across half roud, all 4 turn single, the 1. cu. go half a Figure of Eight through the 2. cu. all hands abrest to the top and back again, the 1. cu. lead between the 2. cu. all a-breast down, the 1. cu. change places the while they lead down, and all four clap hands twice, and turn their Parters half a turn into their places.

The tune was published by Playford with the dance. The music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), turn single, gypsy, cast, lead, figure eight, hands across (and probably others).
