Epsom New Wells ~ Andrew Shaw

Epsom New Wells ~ Andrew Shaw Epsom New Wells ~ Sharp

Epsom New Wells ~ Andrew Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1708 in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1708, London. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2009 and published in Farnicle Huggy. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 16 bars.

Walsh writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be Play'd twice over.

The first Man turn the second Woman, and cast up round the second Man into his own Place, the second Woman casting off round the first Woman into her own place at the same Time The second Man and first Woman do the same Then the first Couple lead thro' the third Couple, the second Couple following them, all to their own Places Then lead to the Wall and back again, all four Foot it to their Partner; the first Couple cast off, and the second Couple turn up the middle

Probably a triple minor originally.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, cast and lead, lead and cast (and probably others).
