Grand Square ~ 6 Couple Rectangle

Grand Square ~ Evens face, 6 couple rectangle Grand Hex Grand Square ~ 6 Couple Rectangle Grand Square ~ 6 Couple Rectangle #2

Grand Square ~ 6 Couple Rectangle is a Square Dance. It was published by sometime before 2024-05-11. It is a 6 Couple Rectangle dance. There is no progression in this dance. The dance lasts 72 bars.

My Square Dance group in Santa Barbara rarely has the 16 people needed for 2 squares, but often has more than 12. So we do a lot of 6 couple rectangle dances (The old Quadrille format with 4 head couples and 2 side couples).

But we never have done a grand square in this format. Of course the standard "Sides face, grand square" won't work (nor will "heads face"), but there are variations which do work. Here are three different examples with two couples in the middle of the square working in sync with the normal four couples on the outside.

This isn't a real dance, just an exploration of a single call in an unusual configuration.

(I am playing a little fast and loose with the definition of "grand square" here, technically the central couples should start by backing out of the middle, rather than leading forward, but I felt to start out backing would be fairly unintuitive, so I have them as they are.)

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color.

The dance contains the following figures: rights and lefts, grand square (and probably others).
